PRESS RELEASE
27 April 2007
Introduction of Calculators in Primary 5 - 6 Mathematics
In line with the phasing in of the revised Primary School Mathematics syllabuses, the Ministry of Education (MOE) will introduce the use of calculators at Primary 5 in 2008 and Primary 6 in 2009.
To align assessment with the curriculum, the use of calculators will be allowed in part of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) Mathematics and Foundation Mathematics examinations from 2009. These examinations will be revised from the current single paper to a two-paper format from 2009. Calculators will only be allowed in Paper 2 of the examinations, which will contain questions for which a calculator can be used.
Use of Calculators in the Curriculum
The introduction of calculators at Primary 5 and Primary 6 aims to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics at the primary level in two ways. First, calculators facilitate the use of more exploratory approaches in learning mathematical concepts, some of which may require repeated computations, or computations with large numbers or decimals. With a calculator, pupils can perform these tasks and better focus on discovering patterns and making generalisations without worrying about computational accuracy.
Second, the use of calculators also enables teachers to use resources from everyday life, such as supermarket advertisements, to set real-life problems with real-life numbers that may be difficult for pupils to work with without a calculator. Pupils would hence be better able to see the connection between mathematics and the world around them.
To equip teachers with the knowledge and skills in integrating calculators into the primary mathematics curriculum, workshops have been conducted since 2006. By the end of 2007, all Primary 5 and Primary 6 teachers would have been trained. The new Primary 5 and Primary 6 textbooks, and the teaching and learning resources provided to schools, will also reflect the use of calculators in the syllabus.
Basic numeracy skills, including mental computation and estimation, are important life skills to be developed early. These skills will continue to be taught and will remain relevant even as computers and calculators become more accessible. Even with the introduction of calculators in the Primary 5 and Primary 6 mathematics curriculum, pupils will still continue to learn, practise and be assessed on computational skills without the use of a calculator.
Revised PSLE Format
With the introduction of calculators, there is a need for the PSLE Mathematics and Foundation Mathematics examination formats to be structured into two papers from 2009. Paper 1 does not allow the use of a calculator so that important computational skills will continue to be emphasized and be assessed. Paper 2 allows pupils the use of calculators to solve problems. Pupils will take both papers on the same day. There will be a break of one hour between the two papers.
The calculator is a tool to help pupils with their computations. There will be no change in the question types, the number of questions for each type, or the level of difficulty of the questions.
Only calculators that are approved by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) will be allowed for use in the examinations. The list of approved calculators is available on the SEAB website. These calculators can also be used at the secondary level and for the GCE N-Level and O-Level examinations. Pupils will only be required to use a basic set of calculator keys at the primary level.
Background
As part of MOE's effort to continuously improve the teaching and learning of mathematics at the primary level, a review of the mathematics syllabus, pedagogies and assessment was carried out and completed in 2004. The new syllabuses are being phased in at Primary 1 to 4 in 2007, Primary 5 in 2008, and Primary 6 in 2009. The use of calculators in the teaching and learning of mathematics at Primary 5 and Primary 6 was one of the recommendations made by the review committee, which comprised academics and practitioners.

Hmm...dunno why,but I've been dreaming of my tutees lately. On Monday night,i dreamt abt Tutee no 1's SA1 results. Then ytd night,i dreamed that i was scolding Tutee no 3. Hahaha. Well, maybe i've been thinking abt them recently. 日有所思,夜有所梦嘛。哈哈!Tutee no 1 has been studying hard recently. She told me ytd that she had spent the past few days studying/revising her Pri 3 to Pri 5 Science topics. And she showed me the thick set of notes that she had written. Wow. No kidding leh. She REALLY studied. And she said that she would revise Maths with her 6A schoolmate today.(She's from 6B)Like,so impressive huh? I just hope that she will continue this hardworking attitude. My goals for her: English >75%, Chinese >91%, Maths >75% and Science >80%.

Geez. Havent been blogging for 4 days. Well,i was just plain lazy lo. Ha.
Anyway,i was so pissed off by this stupid, disgusting, old cheeko peh ytd. This old man had a pair of shades on which reminded me of that Nicholas Tse's father,Xie Xian. Eh,come to think of it now, that cheeko peh looked a bit like Xie Xian. Anyway, noe why i was so pissed off? I was standing outside a shop waiting for my bus when HE walked past me from my right to the left. And he was looking at me from head to toe as he walked past! And i swear that he had a cheeko look on his face ok! Obviously i was very disturbed by his cheeko behaviour so i moved away. After a few mins,i was talking to my mom who was standing on my right when i suddenly felt that someone was looking at me from my left. So i turned my head and saw HIM(the stupid cheeko peh!)staring at me from the back AGAIN! This time,he was looking intently at my back! Holy cow! So cheeko can! I can rem the disgusting look on his face forever! Wat the hell. i was so infuriated! But i didnt confront him la. i jus complained to my mom abt him and moved further away from him again. i tell ya,i wanted to bash him up la! "stupid" is too good an adjective to describe him ok! That i was at Geylang does not mean i'm a __________ for u to look at and haf designs on ok!
And well,i was at Geylang for a religious purpose. I went to see the cute little monk,Xiao Huo Fo,who is believed to be the reincarnation of a well-respected monk who died in 2001. Btw,the Xiao Huo Fo is really adorable! But i really pity him. He has been seeing and blessing SO MANY people that he's totally strained out. Take ytd's event for instance. The blessing event was supposed to start at 10am and there was already a huge crowd(not forgetting queue)waiting to see him before 10am! Mom and i reached there at 10.45am and we thought we were late. But no,we werent. Coz Xiao Huo Fo was still chanting his prayers. So we went to haf an early lunch and by the time we went back to the place, the queue to see him had grown even longer! Aunties, uncles, adults, parents and young kids were there to catch a glimpse of the small monk and waiting to be blessed by him. The poor kid! He had to bless so many ppl(i believe there were abt 1000 ppl in all)that he soon became tired and hungry. Mom and i were almost at the end of the queue and by the time we could see him,the event organisers told us to walk faster, kneel down faster as Xiao Huo Fo was getting really exhausted. When i saw him,i could tell he was really tired and perhaps "sick" liao. He managed to pat my mom's head but he didnt pat me. =( But,nvm. After all,he's just a small child. He needs more rest. Anyway,in conclusion,i think he's really CUTE!!!!! >_< And i really feel that we shld spare him the "torture" alr la. He's still small and has limited energy;we shldn't keep wanting to see him and be blessed by him. He still has quite a few blessing events to attend these few days. May Buddha bless him.
Argh! 9 days to the exams. :S im getting stressed out alr.....

ARGH! I have a running nose again. All because i slept with the aircon on last night. I used to be able to sleep in air-conditioned room without catching a cold, but now, once i sleep in air-con room,i will wake up sneezing. -.- Stupid nose.
Anyway,i jus realised that the prices of some food have gone up. A cup of coffee-with-milk used to cost $1 at the Kopitiam foodcourt in TBP but now it costs $1.10. And a Mac Fillet-O-Fish used to cost $3 or $3.20(i cant rem which)but now it costs $3.35??? Haiz. Muz be due to the GST increase la. Spent $5.85 on Mac lunch juz now. Tsk. So ex. And the cup of Cuppuccino is so ex la,considering the size of it.
Oh man,THIRTEEN more days to the exams. But well,im trying not to think too much. I dunno if it's due to the 2-more-wks-left-only-so-muz-pia thinking, but since yesterday,i really had the URGE to mug and mug and mug. I mean, never before(or seldom) in prev semesters was i so hardworking. Whenever i wanna study, the moment i take out my notes and stuff,i will become very sian and start to slack. There's a voice in me telling me to study but i was just too lazy or sian to really start. HOWEVER,i was completely behaving in the opposite way yesterday. I was seriously determined to start mugging hard for the next 2 wks. And,i suddenly really like studying. Well, mayb i really see the light le bah? LOL.
And yeah,i still have the determination and drive to work hard now. I mean at this moment. So,that's all for now, folks! Byeeeeee!
43 days left to BKK trip. I cant wait! =P
